EFW nominated as finalist for JEC Innovation Award with biocomposite panel
This biocomposite is a sustainable, lightweight panel enabling environmental friendly new solutions in the construction industry, especially for building facades. The panel developed by EFW and its partners will offer an alternative to non-renewable materials helping the construction industry to reduce its immense ecological footprint.
EFW and its partners the BioMat Institute, Faserinstitut Bremen, Hightex Verstärkungsstrukturen GmbH and Fraunhofer IFAM have been nominated to be amongst the finalists of the JEC Innovation Awards. With its expertise in developing and manufacturing high performance composite solutions for aviation and other industries, EFW contributed to an innovation - the ‘EcoFacade’.
Using natural fibres as an alternative to synthetic fibres has an impact on the life cycle of the product. Flax as basis for EFW’s biocomposite panel is a cost-effective and sustainable raw material. The EcoFacade offers a distinctive and variable design while reducing environmental impact through CO2-neutral reinforcement fibres. The innovative panel is meeting requirements of the construction industry, in particular concerning UV, moisture and fire resistance. In addition to these physical properties, the biocomposite panel has mechanical properties such as wind or fatigue resistance and meets fire protection requirements of class A. Since the panels can be configured to provide either shading or thermal insulation for facades, the energy efficiency of buildings can be significantly increased.
From 3-5 May 2022, EFW will exhibit a demonstrator of the biocomposite panel at JEC World in Paris (hall 5, at booth number C80).
